This post is a bit different than usual but it is equally as entertaining. Over the years I have tried multiple styles trying to find one that fits me best. Here I have listed some of my tips to help you discover what style works best for you, and some outfit inspiration as well. Let's get started.
Finding what clothes fit you best:
Discovering your style can be near impossible if you don't know what clothes best fit your body type. I used to just base my outfit off of what I like to wear (which is equally important) but when I tried to copy the inspiration I found on Pinterest, the outfit would look totally different on me than on the model.
One video I recommend watching to help with this is by Asia Jackson. It's about 25 minutes long, but is worth all of your time. After watching this and following the steps she gave me it became so much easier for me to understand my body and how clothes fit me. She has 2 seperate videos, one on understanding your body and another on styling clothing, which we will talk about in a bit. Click on the photo below to go straight to her video.
Finding Inspiration:
I love Pinterest. I'd personally rather spend hours scrolling on there than Instagram. It is full of wonderful ideas for potential outfits to wear. If I have a specific event to attend and I have no clue where to start, I go to Pinterest and match up what I have to what the model is wearing. Incorporating my taste as well. This is a basic Pinterest board that I made with ideas for potential outfits. The board is full of a range of different choices that fit anyone's style. (link)
Now, this doesn't mean that if you don't own anything similar to what I've put on the board that you have to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe. That is not the idea. This process is just for you to examine and determine what your likes and dislikes are when it comes to articles of clothing. Buying clothing in excess just to not wear it is a part of the accumulating pollution caused by fast fashion. Besides the clothes you have are probably spectacular, you just need to learn how to...
Style Outfits:
Styling is one of my favorite parts of composing an outfit. I am honestly ready to buy a mannequin just so I can see how my outfits look before I put them on my body. Because that is one of the best tips I can offer you. TRY THINGS ON. Mix things up! Put articles of clothing that you personally think will look horrendous together and see if you're right. I just discovered how to layer outfits and am trying to discover what items in my closet look better layered, or individually. Asia Jackson also has a video over how to style which I am linking down bellow. I know I'm promoting her quite a bit but her videos seriously helped me. I was a person who disliked shopping because it felt like no matter what I was trying on, it just didn't feel comfortable resting on my body. No one should feel uncomfortable in the clothes they're wearing because we have to wear the all the time.
Figure out your color season:
As I said before, I hated shopping. I would easily get overwhelmed and could never figure out what looked best on me and if I thought it was cute, it often didn't feel comfortable. I KID YOU NOT, after I learned my color season a) it made so much sense why certain items looked ugly on me and b) made me feel so much calmer when shopping because I knew what colors would look best so I didn't waste time on the others.
I am a warm spring which means I look better in navy, olive, nude tones, caramel, and certain yellows. There are different variations: there is a clear, cool, and deep winter; there is a clear, warm, and light spring; a light, cool, and soft summer; and a soft, warm, and deep autumn. I am linking a quiz that you can take (it's the one I took) that gives you your color analysis.
CLosing
So, you now have all the tools available to you, play with them. Discover what clothes make you feel comfortable and happy. Learn about what colors flatter your skin and highlight your features. And just have fun. Fashion is a form of self expression that with the right approach can be something so interesting.
