Buzzfeed Told Me I'd Get Into Yale

Updated: Nov 9, 2023

I was sitting in Chemistry class with my friend when the conversation of college came up. I joked and said that it would be hilarious to apply to whatever college Buzzfeed, a popular quiz and blog site, told me to apply to. I loaded the site and began taking a few different quizzes to determine my "dream college".

Now before you jump to conclusions, the questions I was answering went along the lines of "pick the best color that describes you", or "choose a grand hall that you would have in your college". In reality the recommendations that Buzzfeed gave me do align with my values and what I am looking for in a college, but my decision is not going to be solely based on what Buzzfeed told me. If that were all it took, I think we would have many more Harvard graduates.

Which brings me to today's topic: how most people today believe that you can achieve your goals with no hard work.

I am usually a hardworking person. I learned from a young age that you'll never get anywhere unless you work hard for it. My parents are living proof of that. I pushed myself because I wanted to earn my spot at the grand table that is life. I will acknowledge however that I can often procrastinate on things that will in the long run help me achieve the goals I have set for myself. But I think more and more often today, people believe that the way they'll reach their goals is simply because of the fact that they want to.

If you look at things from a philosophical point of view (which who doesn't love to look at things that way) we all have the concept of free will. We are in charge of our actions and form our own path in life. However I also believe that our destiny is pre-written for us. There is a greater objective and a purpose over why we are where we are today. It all plays a part in the ultimate plan that is life. At first it doesn't sound like you can have both of these things at once but think about it; if you as a baby are just left to just sit in a room, you are not nurtured, taught, or cared for; you would die. One must actively want to partake in their own fate in order for it to happen. You can't just sit back and let life go. You'll never obtain anything that way.

This also plays into my whole quantum physics theory. HEAR ME OUT. One of Newton's Laws of Gravity is "every action has an equal and opposite reaction" (why do I remember that, Hamilton). What if the same concept were true for everything? Every action, decision, choice that you make in your day to life has its opposite where you did or didn't do it. This forms another universe thus cementing my theory of the greater multiverse.

I have strayed quite a bit from my original Yale thing but it all ties together very nicely. If you make no decisions, there are no alternate realities, there's no different futures to exist. So why aren't you taking those chances? I'm not talking about those risky-potential-death chances, I'm talking about steping out your comfort zone a smidge. I used to have the worst fear of talking and sharing my opinion, look at me now. Sharing my crazy ideas with the world <3

XOXO, Eleanor
